Missing Woman In Bighorn Mountains Found Deceased

A Kentucky woman missing in the Bighorn Mountains west of Buffalo since Monday has been found deceased, according to Johnson County Sheriff Steve Kozisek.

Kozisek said Carol Hanchette, 62, of Louisville, Kentucky, had been camping with a companion, Richard Cornelius, 67, of Billings, Montana when the two became separated during a hike and a search was initiated for the woman, who was found Tuesday morning.

According to Sheriff Kozisek, the pair had hiked into the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area on Friday, October 6th and had set up a camp.
On Saturday, October 7th, the two hiked further into the wilderness area and had become separated late that afternoon and Richard said he could not find camp and spent the night out in the open, building a fire.
On Sunday it began snowing and he again could not find camp, spending the night out away from camp.
On Monday, the weather cleared and he was able to find his way out of the wilderness, where he contacted authorities. Johnson County Search and Rescue responded to the area with 17 searchers along with 7 from Sheridan County.
The searchers found a note from Hanchette saying she was walking out to find help, taking a sleeping bag and other gear with her.

She was found deceased Tuesday morning by search and rescue personnel.
