Many Opinions Given At Public Meeting On Lake DeSmet

The public information forum on Lake DeSmet organized by the Lake DeSmet Conservation District and held Tuesday night was well attended with most seats in the Buffalo High School Auditorium filled.

Those attending heard presentations from the eight panel members who gave background information ranging from how Sheridan and Johnson Counties became involved in ownership of the lake, how maintenance costs continue to mount at the lake, to how the proposed lease with the Wyoming Game and Fish came came about.

An extensive question and answer period followed, with most people seeming to be in favor of multiple uses of the lake, including the Game and Fish lease.

Sheridan County Commissioners are for the lease, while Johnson County's Commissioners are not in favor of the lease, wanting more discussion, study and negotiation before a decision is made.

Johnson County Assessor Cindy Rogers shared information she compiled on the economic feasibility of maintaning the lake over the 99-year lease, with the taxpayers of Sheridan and Johnson Counties possibly footing the entire bill.

No decisions were made at the meeting, and the next step will be for the information from the meeting to be comiled in a report that will be available soon at either the LDCC or LDCD websites here: or
