A Look Back in Time: July 31, 1914

Sheridan's brewery has been equipped with a siren, and arrangements have been made for blowing it in case of a fire.

The blowing of the whistle will be a signal for people in the city to shut off their water. Three short blasts from the whistle will indicate that the fire is out, and consumers can turn their water back on.

John Maria and Joe Gavios of Monarch are confined in the county jail, charged with arson. They are accused of having started a fire a few nights ago in a building in Monarch. Sacks saturated with oil were piled against the building and set ablaze. The flames were discovered and put out before any damage was done.

Mrs. B.C. Cass returned yesterday from a several days' outing at Paradise ranch.
