A Look Back in Time: July 18, 1914

Nearly the entire Sheridan Ice Company houses on Jefferson Street were destroyed yesterday by fire.

The blaze started at the west end of the building in a pile of rubbish and straw used earlier in the summer to cover ice. The fire spread rapidly. By the time firemen arrived, they couldn't do anything except keep the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings. Firemen were greatly disadvantaged because there was only one fire plug near the building.
