Local Musician Teaches Jammin'

A music class that teaches students how to jam is being offered this fall. Leslie Stratmoen has the details.

A local musician is offering three music-related courses this fall through the community college. Lynn Young of Buffalo is offering “Let's Pick – Playing Handmade Music with Friends,” “Roots of Country Music” and “All About Stringed Instruments.” Here's what students can expect, straight from the musician's mouth. First, he talked about the “Let's Pick” class.

Songs the students will learn, he said, will be old standards like “You Are My Sunshine” and “Red, River Valley.” Now, about the “Roots of Country Music” class, he said, he's looking forward to that.

He said the “All About Stringed Instruments” class will be more of like workshop.

Specifics about the classes and what students will need is included at the end of this story. Classes run one or two nights, starting on Oct. 15, and cost $20 to $35, with a $10 discount if signed up for all three. The courses will be offered at the Sheridan College in Johnson County campus in Buffalo, as part of the community education program.

“Let’s Pick – Playing handmade music with friends,” on Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 6:30-9 p.m. The cost is $35. Participants will learn about ‘jamming’ and are encouraged to bring a fiddle, guitar, banjo, bass or mandolin, or just come sing and have fun.

“Roots of Country Music – A listening history” is a two-evening course, on Monday, Oct. 27, and Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 6:30-9 p.m. both nights. The cost is $35. Participants will learn about the origins of country music and listen to vintage recordings and live performances of local musicians.

Young’s final course, “All about stringed instruments,” will be held Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 6:30-9 p.m. The cost is $20. Participants are encouraged to bring their instruments to learn about maintenance and value, as well as how to change strings and tune instruments.
