Liaisons Help Parents, Schools Connect

As Sheridan Media has reported, the Sheridan school district's Next Level program to improve high school graduation numbers starts in kindergarten.

Mitch Craft, who is the junior high school principal and who spearheads the Next Level program, said an important part of the program are the parent liaisons in Sheridan's five elementary schools.

He explained what the parent liaisons do.

He said the district has the equivalent of a half-time parent liaison at each elementary school in the city. Those are Sagebrush, Highland Park. Woodland Park, Meadowlark and Coffeen. Craft said Story Elementary School in Story doesn't have a dedicated liaison, but parents can arrange to meet with the Coffeen school liaison.

The parent liaison program started this year as a three-year pilot effort, and liaisons currently serve only the elementary schools. But Craft said if the program is a success, liaisons could be added at the junior high and high schools. Liaisons are provided through Child Advocacy Services of the Big Horns.
