Johnson County Sheriff Steve Kozisek gave a short media conference at the Powder River Rest Area east of Buffalo at about 11:30 this morning to update the public on the search efforts for a 4 year-old girl that fell through the ice Sunday night.

Kozisek said the girl and her father, who are residents of the motel at the rest area, had been for a walk when the incident occurred at about 6:30 Sunday evening.

He tells us what happened next.

Kozisek said there were roughly 75 individuals helping with the search Sunday evening, including Johnson County Search and Rescue, Johnson County Fire District #1, and EMS personnel. They also had help from services from Campbell County, Sheridan County, and Washakie County.
Johnson County Road and Bridge brought out a trackhoe to help break up ice on the river, which was a solid sheet, according to Kozisek. Prior to the trackhoe arriving to help, crews were using chainsaws and sledge hammers to try to break up the ice.

Kozisek said there are currently about 45 individuals still searching the river today, and an airboat has joined the search, courtesy of Natrona County.

Anywhere from 16 to 18 crews in wetsuits have been searching the river last night and today, and many people are searching along the river banks from Interstate 90 downriver a few miles toward the Montana border.

Kozisek said he believes this is the only river rescue that has been conducted on the Powder River, at least during his 42 years in law enforcement. The river is anywhere from a few inches to up to 10feet deep in some holes and is very treacherous, with sandy bottoms , debris and surprisingly swift currents at the moment, according to the sheriff.
The search will continue through today and efforts will be evaluated throughout the day as to whether to continue the search past today, Kozisek said.

We will have more information on this ongoing story as it is released.
