Monday was the first day of school for Johnson County School District One, and the day “went well,” according to Superintendent Gerry Chase.

Chase said one staff member commented to him that it was the “smoothest ever” first day they had witnessed.

There is only one minor issue at the district's Meadowlark Elementary School, where the cafeteria is not available, but staff and students are flexible, and the lunch room should be available for use later this week, he said.

Although official numbers won't be available until after the Labor Day Weekend break, Superintendent Chase did say it appears there are more students enrolled in the district than anticipated, but they will know for sure in mid-September.

Overall, Chase said during his walk-through at one of the schools on the first day, he found a “positive, healthy and orderly environment.”
