With 100% of the 17 precincts in Johnson County counted, there were no real surprises in the outcomes of the races here. Voter turnout countywide was just over 79%, which was one of the highest turnouts for a non-Presidential election year, according to Johnson County Clerk Linda Barnhardt. Election results came in quickly in the county, with final counts released just after 8 pm.

In the county races, for Johnson County Commission, Delbert Eitel retained his seat and will be joined by John S. Gibbs. Smokey Wildeman's seat was not up in this election.

For County Attorney, Kenneth DeCock defeated Greg L. Goddard. Steve Kozisek was re-elected Johnson County Sheriff.

Vicki Edelman ran unopposed for County Clerk, as did Carla Faircloth for Treasurer and Thelma Axberg for Clerk of District Court.

In the County Assessor's race, Cindy Rogers beat out Rande Money with 53% of the vote to 47%.

For State Representative in District 40, Incumbent Mike Madden defeated challenger Richard Tass by a 64 to 36 percent margin.

In the city races, for Mayor of Buffalo, Randy Dyess defeated Bruce Hepp by just 72 votes. For the Buffalo City Council four-year terms, Russ Humphrey retained his seat on the council and will be joined by newcomer Stan Lakin. For the Buffalo City Council unexpired term, newcomer Bill Hawley defeated Eddy D. Boone to win that seat.

For Johnson County School District Trustee, four have won seats and are Mark Gordon, Kathy Smith, Rich Hall and Nicole Novotny-Wonka. Deb McMahon won the seat for the School District Trustee At-Large unexpired term.

Three will move on to the Cemetery District Trustee position: Nancy Elm, Steve Gonsolley and Gene A. Baehler.

Hospital District Trustee positions went to Tom Berry, Raymond A. Holt and Phyllis Hepp. A. Dozier Tabb, Greg Smith and Mark Wilson were awarded with Trustees of the Rural Healthcare District.

Lake DeSmet Conservation District Rural positions went to Ryan Fieldgrove and Virginia Watt, and the at-large seat went to Dave Fraley. Daniel Mahoney was voted in for the Powder River Conservation District Rural seat, George Renkert took the unexpired term seat and James Schiermiester took the at-large seat.

Johnson County Fire District Trustee positions went to Mike Fraley and John E. Garman. Fred J. Carr and Kelly Lohse won Powder River Fire District Trustee positions.

The Two-Percent Lodging Tax was again approved by voters in Johnson County by a 72 to 28% margin.

And the Solid Waste District Mill Levy, to raise funds for a new landfill north of the current site near Buffalo, was approved 67 to 33%.
