Johnson County Considers Mower For Mikesell/Potts

Johnson County's Commissioners considered a request from County Sanitarian Rick Durfee to purchase a zero-turn mower for the county-run Mikesell/Potts Recreation Area at Lake DeSmet.

Durfee's crews are responsible for maintaining and cleaning the recreation area, and Durfee told the commissioners that the purchase would drastically reduce the amount of man-hours he and his crew spend at the lake, which is necessary with the added responsibilities his department will be taking on at the Justice/Judicial Center complex.

Mikesell/Potts took in roughly $17,000 in camping fees from April of this year through September, according to Durfee, and he suggested some of the money could be used for the purchase of the mower.

The cost of the mower, if purchased before October 30, will be $3,948.05, significantly lower than the $4,899 quote Durfee received for a purchase made in the spring of 2013.

The commissioners approved the purchase, with the stipulation that Durfee wait until the end of the month as requested by County Treasurer Carla Faircloth.
