John Brown Has Preliminary Hearing

John Arthur Brown had a complete change in demeanor from a week ago in Sheridan County Circuit Court. Thursday afternoon he went before Judge John Sampson for his Preliminary Hearing on the alleged 2007 theft of a 1994 Ford 3/4-ton truck and a 1997 Honda TRX 300 all-terrain vehicle.

When he made his initial appearance last week before Magistrate John Botten, he lost his temper, used foul language, and was disrespectful to Deputy County Attorney Dianna Bennett. At his Preliminary Hearing, Brown apologized to Ms. Bennett and to the court for his behavior, explaining that he had not had his medications that day and was angry about being extradited to Sheridan from Oregon on the charges.

Brown is accused of taking the two vehicles, along with several hand tools and money, from rancher Michael Helvey, for whom Brown worked as a handyman briefly in July 2007.

After hearing testimony from Sheridan County Sheriff's Deputy Mike Hamilton, Judge Sampson found there was reasonable evidence to bind Brown over to 4th Judicial District Court. Because he is a flight risk, Sampson continued Brown's $15,000 cash bond.
