JoCo Agrees to Buy DeSmet

The Johnson County Commissioners have elected to buy Sheridan County's water rights interests in Lake DeSmet.

This morning's commitment is made with the understanding that Johnson County will enter into a lease agreement with the Game and Fish Department while preserving agricultural irrigation interests as well as recreational use of the lake.

The agreement, which is expected to be adopted by Sheridan County, will ultimately discontinue Sheridan County's financial burdens of maintaining their portion of the lake, which is approximately $100,000 per year. This arrangement would also make obsolete the Lake DeSmet Counties Coalition.
