The Johnson County Commission voted to end the contract between the county and Volunteers of America for juvenile probation services.

The Commission approved a letter to VOA which addressed concerns the commissioners had regarding what they perceived as a lack of commitment on the part of VOA toward the County.

The commissioners had requested a proposed new contract be drafted by VOA and sent to the County for review, and this has not been done, according to the letter.

The Commission also had requested VOA keep County Attorney Ken DeCock involved in the hiring of a new juvenile probation officer, which the commissioners said had not been done.

The Commission decided Tuesday to void their contract and hire their own probation officer, which will be based out of the County Attorney's office. Commission chair Smokey Wildeman explains the commission's decision.

The contract the County has with VOA for bed days will continue, Wildeman said, but will drop from 100 bed days per year the County pays for to 50 bed days per year. That contract will be negotiated later this summer.

The Commission announced a work session between themselves and VOA to discuss their differences on Tuesday, May 24th in the Commission Chambers beginning at 1:30 pm.
