Jo Co Commission Approves Bentonite Mine Permit

Jo Co Commission Approves Bentonite Mine Permit

The Johnson County Commissioners have approved a permit application for a bentonite mine in Southern Johnson County.

The permit application was reviewed by County Planner Rob Yingling, who said his office had no issues with the application and recommended approval by the commission. The commissioners were a little surprised the permit had come before them, as it is unusual to request their approval.

They discussed the issue at the meeting.

The permit will allow Black Hills Bentonite to operate the mine located on property south of Kaycee almost to the Natrona County/Johnson County line and west of Interstate 25.

Commissioner Delbert Eitel recused himself from the vote, believing his company might be contracted to haul the mineral from the mine site, and not wanting to create a conflict of interest.

The commission gave their approval for the permit.
