JCSD1 Reworking Rules For Social Media In Schools

The Johnson County School District One Board of Trustees are looking at updating policy concerning social media and its use by faculty and students within the district, to better protect the district and its employees, but especially to protect the students.

At their last meeting, the school board passed policy IJNDC on first reading, but they expect to make changes to the policy in the next few weeks before it is passed on third and final reading.

The district wants students and staff to be able to use new technologies, but feel there should be a definition of boundaries of appropriate use to protect the district, staff and students.

Superintendent Gerry Chase commented on the thinking behind the policy change.

The board discussed the possibility of implementing software the district could acquire for staff/student use such as Googlevoice or similar programs that track communications for everyone's protection.

The board voted down an amendment to the policy and voted 8-1 to accept it as written on first read.
It will be discussed further at their next meeting February 23rd.
