The Johnson County School District One Board of Trustees have passed on second reading a policy change requiring background checks for school volunteers.

The board voted to pass the policy on first reading at a meeting in Kaycee in January and passed it on second reading at their regular meeting February 9th.

Essentially, the policy would require every volunteer wishing to work in the schools or to chaperone students on overnight trips to provide a current Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board certificate or submit to fingerprinting to conduct a background check.

The district will pay for the cost of the background checks.

Board member Greg Haas relayed some concerns he had heard over the policy.

The policy will have a chance to pass its third reading at the school board meeting Monday, February 23rd.
