The Board of Trustees for Johnson County School District One held a special meeting Monday night to hear a petition filed by parents and community members from Kaycee and other parts of the county that essentially wanted the contract for District Superintendent Dr. Gerry Chase to be terminated on or before June 30, 2018.

After reading the petition in its entirety into the public record, Board President Rich Hall opened the meeting for public comment concerning the issue of the renewal of Dr. Chase'e contract.
A number of community members, teachers and others spoke both for and against renewing the contract, as did board members themselves.

Eventually the board voted to deny the petition to terminate Dr. Chase's contract with Kathy Smith, Steve Reimann, Rich Hall, Marcy Schueler and Tim Blaney voting against the petition, and Dave Belus, Jodi Verplancke and Margo Sabec voting for the petition.
Nicole Novotny-Wonka abstained.

Also voted down was a motion to accept the contract renewal for Dr. Chase and remove stipends for a vehicle and cell phone expenses from the contract.
That failed on a 6-3 vote.

Finally, the original contract renewal was approved by the board with Belus, Smith, Reimann, Hall, Schueler and Blaney voting for the renewal, and Sabec, Verplancke and Novotny-Wonka voting against renewing the contract.

After the meeting, Board President Rich Hall said he thought that overall the special meeting was good and productive.

We will have more details on the special meeting in upcoming stories.
