JCSD1 To Adopt Policy For Volunteer's Background Checks

Johnson County School District One's Board of Trustees adopted on first reading, a policy change that would, if passed on three readings, require background checks for some volunteers at schools.

At their regular meeting this week, the board members discussed implementing the policy.

The board felt it was their duty to implement the policy change to protect children.
Discussions included drawbacks such as the amount of time it may take to get results on background checks to the possibility of losing volunteers and the costs associated with the checks the school district would bear.

The board discussed being very careful in wording the policy change and chair Rich Hall asked the Policy Committee to continue looking into the wording of the policy and bring any changes back before the board at future readings.

The board accepted the policy change on first reading.
