CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Department of Transportation says the state is expanding its vehicle insurance verification system. Beginning Monday, state troopers will automatically get insurance information on vehicles every time they make a stop. The insurance verification system, which began last July 1, had primarily been used in crash investigations. The state says insurance companies that operate in the state have increased the speed at which their databases can be accessed, so the system can now provide immediate information for any traffic stop or license plate inquiry. Drivers are required to show proof of insurance when they license a vehicle. Marianne Zivkovich, WYDOT driver license supervisor, says the problem is people that get insurance to license a vehicle and then cancel it. WYDOT estimates about 13 percent of the private motor vehicles in the state are uninsured.
