Industry Group Appeals Oil-Gas Court Ruling

CHEYENNE (AP) - An oil and gas industry group has appealed a federal court ruling that the Interior department must abide by a 60-day deadline to issue oil and gas leases after they are sold.

The Western Energy Alliance filed the appeal last week.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Freudenthal ruled in June that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management needed to decide within 60 days of auctioning off an oil or gas lease whether or not to issue the lease. The lawsuit followed years of delays in issuing hundreds of leases in the West amid protests filed by environmental groups.

Kathleen Sgamma with the alliance says the BLM has responded to the ruling by asking companies to continue to wait indefinitely. A BLM spokeswoman declined to comment.
