We reported last week that most of Sheridan and Buffalo experienced a lengthy internet and phone outage Friday after a contractor ran an auger through a significant amount of fiber optic cable owned by CenturyLink. Sheridan Media's Chris Foy has an update.

Not only were local businesses, from banks to restaurants, unable to accept credit or debit card transactions - even the 911 service in Buffalo was temporarily hampered.

The incident affected DSL, T1 and fiber customers in Buffalo and Sheridan as well as DSL customers in Newcastle, Upton and Worland between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday.

A telecommunications representative who preferred to remain anonymous told Sheridan Media that the cost and the impact of the outage could not be calculated. In any case, the source said the one responsible for cutting the fiber is ultimately the one responsible for footing the repair bill.

Service was eventually restored Friday evening after the road covering the severed cables was dug up and a new underground conduit was installed.

CenturyLink Market Development Manager, Michelle Jackson, said due to privacy concerns the name of the company or individual responsible for cutting the fiber would not be released.
