Sheridan County School District 2 can now boast four Blue Ribbon Schools.

Highland Park Elementary this week joined Henry A. Coffeen, Sagebrush and Meadowlark elementary schools as a recipient of the national designation.

Highland Park Principal Scott Clelland learned of the award on Monday. He said he was thrilled. He added the first thing he wanted to do was let the school's staff know, because the honor comes from their hard work and dedication.

More than 370 students are enrolled at Highland Park this year.

The national program is awarded by the U.S. Department of Education and, according to the federal department's web site, recognizes public and private schools in the country for overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among students. The Sheridan school is one of only 337 schools nationwide to receive a 2014 Blue Ribbon School designation.
