Gutter Bins: Keeping Water Clean

For Brian Deurloo, clean water is the name of the game. A Sheridan native and graduate of Sheridan High School, Deurloo has since created a stormwater filtration system called the Gutter Bin. He shares what prompted him to invent such a device.

The reasons filtering water is important to Deurloo, include some Environmental Protection Agency statistics that say 1 cigarette butt will kill 5 of 10 fish in a liter of water. They also stipulate that over 4 trillion cigarette butts are littered annually and the mass of ocean plastic estimated to outweigh the fish by the year 2050. Duerloo explains how his product works to alleviate that impact.

According to their tests, 99% of gross pollutant and cigarette butts are captured, more than 70% of sediment captured by mass, and over 50% of hydrocarbon and heavy metal sediment is captured by the Gutter Bins. As of Tuesday, the Gutter Bins have removed 1113 pounds of pollution. To learn more follow this link to their website To hear the full interview with Deurloo, listen here
