Groundbreaking Set for New Covered Ice Arena

Ground will be broken on March 1 for a new covered ice rink in Sheridan.

The project is by Sheridan on Skates, an organization that recently assumed ownership and management of the Sheridan Community Ice Rink. Sheridan on Skates member Charley Whiton (WHITE-un) says the covered rink span more than 35,000 square feet and will include the ice rink, locker rooms, an exercise room, a concession stand and expanded seating.

He said the skating organization hopes to have the work completed by next fall. He said the the ice skating season won't be expanded next year, but plans are for longer seasons after that.

He said Sheridan on Skates has raised a little over $6.5 million. The goal is to raise $8 million to fund the project. He talked about the finances.

The ice rink offers free open skating and skates to the public, a competitive figure skating program, competitive and house league youth programs for boys and girls and adult hockey leagues for women and men. The rink partners with schools and local non-profit organizations to offer weekly skating sessions and special events.
