Governor Freudenthal Talks About Keeping Kids In School

This year both Sheridan High School and Fort MacKenzie High School failed to meet Federal Average Yearly Progress goals for graduation rates. Governor Dave Freudenthal says that keeping kids in school can affect more than just the students.

Finding ways to get students to finish high school will also help with college enrollments.

There doesn’t appear to be one easy solution. Wyoming law only provides that kids must stay in school until they are sixteen. Withholding access to drivers’ licenses for youth who are not in school has been considered but may not be feasible. Some suggest the legislature my need to raise the legal age in an attempt keep kids in school longer.

School District 2 made several minor changes in their programs last year and hopes to see improvement in next year’s numbers based on those changes.
