Governor Freudenthal Declines to Apply for Federal Education Jobs Funding

Governor Dave Freudenthal notified the U.S. Department of Education that he would not apply for funding under the Education Jobs Fund program. Governor Freudenthal said the most effective use of the funds would be for one-time projects:

The Governor added that he cannot justify applying for funds intended to prevent teacher layoffs, and that any local layoffs were not the result of cuts at the state level:

The total amount of funds available to the state in the Federal Education Funds was over 17.5 million dollars.
