When a child goes into foster care in Sheridan or Johnson county, the Sheridan Foster Parent Exchange goes to work.

Carla Trier, who's executive director of the non-profit organization, said the main purpose of the Exchange is to provide supplies for children when they go into foster care.

Trier said the Foster Parent Exchange does more than just provide the initial kits. She said the organization provides kits for youth who may be “couch surfing,” working with the Volunteers of America independent living program and with Sheridan High School to provide full hygiene kits including laundry soap, snacks and other needs of the youth.

The organization also serves grandparents raising grandchildren and other family members providing care of relatives' children and children in treatment facilities and group homes.

Trier said the organization works with Compass Center for Families and Sheridan County School District 2's parent liaison program.

Trier said the organization also provides special programs for the holidays, such as Christmas and Easter.

Trier said the Foster Parent Exchange served 45 children in Sheridan and Johnson counties last year, and 14 children in the two counties just in June this year.

She said there are not as many foster parents as the organization needs in either of the two counties, and there is a desperate need for foster parents in Johnson County.
