Former Natrona County Coroner Sentenced On Drug Charge

CASPER, (AP) - The 53-year-old former chief deputy coroner in Natrona County has received 10 years of probation on drug possession charges. Gary Hazen was sentenced Friday by Laramie County Judge Peter Arnold.

If he completes probation, Hazen will not serve jail time. Hazen was initially charged with eight counts of drug possession and two counts of failing to account for prescription drugs received because of his office. As part of the plea agreement, Hazen pleaded guilty in July to possession of the painkiller hydrocodone and methadone, a drug used to combat withdrawal symptoms.

Hazen was charged last year, after investigators searched his Casper home amid allegations he was taking prescription drugs from death scenes. He was fired from his job a month later.
