Forage On Elk Refuge Slightly Below Average

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - Biologists estimate that elk should have about 13,653 tons of forage on the National Elk Refuge heading into the winter. National Elk Refuge biologist Eric Cole says that's good news for the elk, even if the figure is slightly below the average of 14,348 tons.
Cole says one possible reason for the slightly lower is that a lot of the precipitation happened in August. He says early-season precipitation tends to produce more forage.
Cole says construction on the refuge may have also played a role.
