The first phase of a project that will enlarge and renovate the Sheridan Senior Center and expand the kitchen is expected to be completed by the end of January or first of February.

Senior Center Director Carmen Rideout provided an update on the project earlier this week, and said the entire project should be finished in September. General contractor for the $4.6 million project is Dick Anderson Construction.

Rideout said the project is being done in three phases. When the first phase is completed, which includes adding 5,000 square feet of additional space, she said the second phase will begin.

Rideout said Phase 3, which is the work on the kitchen, is expected to start in June. She said Phase 1 of the project includes additional and renovation of the Senior Center's lobby area as well as administration and some service offices. She said 2,000 square feet of the new space added in this first phase will be for the kitchen and the family caregiver offices. She said moving Day Break, the Center's adult day care facility, into a separate building, created additional opportunities for the Senior Center's expansion.

She said there will also be space for lifelong learning classrooms. She said the added space will allow the Senior Center to offer more of the activities that people have expressed interest in. She said the work in Phase 2 will also create more space for activities, including art, and Phase 3 will include complete renovation of the Senior Center dining room as well as the kitchen.
