It's Fire Prevention Week in Sheridan County, with the focus this year, says Sheridan Fire Marshall Brian Songer, on smoke detectors.

Also, as has been the custom of Sheridan Fire & Rescue, they are conducting tours throughout the week for area elementary students at the Sheridan Fire Station. Songer explains why they hold these tours.

A good rule to follow, Songer says, is to change the batteries in smoke detectors the two times a year clocks are changed. And a perk during this week, he adds, is that TCI Verizon Wireless on Grinnell is giving out free batteries for smoke detectors.

To culminate the week, Songer says they will have an Open House at the station. The morning will include firetruck rides – weather permitting – as well as a firefighter combat challenge. And CERT will be on hand to demonstrate fire extinguisher use, with various sizes cut apart to show how they work.

The Fire Prevention Week Open House is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The child passenger safety seat checkpoint is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers will be served starting around noon. All open house events and the BBQ are free to the public.
