Feds Urge Judge Not to Block Birth-Control Rule

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Government lawyers are opposing a request from Catholic organizations in Wyoming seeking to block the birth-control coverage requirement in the federal health care overhaul. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Cheyenne and other organizations filed a lawsuit in January objecting to what they say is the federal government's requirement that they pay for insurance coverage for non-ministerial workers for contraception and abortion services.

Lawyers for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services this week urged U.S. District Judge Scott Skavdahl of Casper to deny the groups' request for an injunction. The government states the Diocese of Cheyenne is exempt from the contraception coverage requirement. It states most other groups could sidestep the requirement by certifying they meet certain criteria.
