Exploring End of Life Care With Hospice of the Big Horns

The Hospice of the Big Horns is hosting an upcoming workshop free to the public on a topic we tend not to hear about much - called "The Dynamics of Dying."

The first session of the workshop will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on January 16 at the Sheridan Wesleyan Church, with another lunch session from noon to 1 p.m. An additional session open to the public will take place on the same day between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Parts of the workshop will explore how hospice care subtly differs from palliative medicine, which is pain management for those with illnesses - terminal or curable. Also addressed will be the societal fear of death and the stigma that often surrounds talking about it.

Medical Oncologist with the Welch Cancer Center, Dr. Gregory Marino, will speaking at the lunch session. He says you don't have to be a medical professional to learn something at the workshop - because it applies to everyone.

Dr. Marino explains the differences between palliative care and hospice.

Barbara Karnes, award-winning author of a series of books centered on the end of life experience and a nurse, will be one of the speakers at the morning and afternoon workshops.

If you're interested in attending, call the Hospice of the Big Horns at 672-1083.
