Drug Take-Back Day Saturday in Buffalo, Sheridan

Local law enforcement and the Community Resource Center are teaming up for the Second Annual Prescription Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday, April 30th.

Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy Kelly Waugh tells us more about the program.

The drug take-back program is designed to get unused or expired prescription drugs out of the home and dispose of them properly. Prescription drug misuse is a growing problem, Waugh said, but especially with young people who think because they are prescribed drugs they are safe to use.

Waugh said people need to be aware of what medications they have in their home and to safeguard them from everyone.

The local drug take-back will be Saturday at IGA in Buffalo, and Waugh tells us what can be dropped off and how.

According to information provided by Bill Hawley, Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist with the CRC, over 40 pounds of prescription drugs were collected at last fall's event. Also, The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America today.

The Sheridan Police Department and Sheridan County Sheriff's Office will also be hosting an event on Saturday at Walgreen's on Coffeen Avenue.
