Donner Party to be Focus of Library Program

The ill-fated Donner Party will be the focus of a program next week at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.

Mike Brown of Sheridan will present the program at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the library's Inner Circle. Due to the grim nature of the subject matter, library Program Coordinator Zola Schockley suggests that attendees be over the age of 18.

The Donner Party's troubles started in Wyoming in the summer of 1846 near present-day Farson, and Brown takes an in-depth look at connections between this event and other aspects of American history such as Manifest Destiny and the fur trade. He uses a variety of resources such as journals, articles and oral histories.

Brown worked for several years for the Bureau of Land Management, interpreting and managing National Historic Trails. He has given various presentations about the American West throughout southeastern Wyoming and surrounding states.
