Donations Sought For Music Scholarship Auction

The Dan Carlat/Occidental Jam Memorial Scholarship Auction will be happening Thursday, January 24th, but donations are now being sought so they can be processed for the upcoming auction.

The scholarship was created to honor Dan Carlat for his contributions to music in the community and his commitment to the Occidental Thursday Night Jam, according to a press release from the scholarship committee. It was created in 2009 following Carlat's death.

Applicants must be graduating seniors who have a 3.0 or better grade point average; have an admission letter from a college, university, or other formal music or music education program; they must write the Board a letter describing their future plans for music or music education and why they should receive the scholarship; and they must provide a letter of recommendation from someone who has knowledge of their interest and participation in music.

A scholarship board was formed to administer the annual scholarship for graduating high school seniors who plan to pursue an education in music.
The members of the scholarship board are Tracy Carlin, Helen Jones, Lynn Young, Ed Crain, and Doug Brothers.
Last year’s $3,000 scholarship winner was Shawna Wolf of Buffalo.

Tracy Carlin, member of the Scholarship Board, said “We’ve auctioned everything from western art to musical instruments. People donate hunting trips and all kinds of services. Each year we raise enough money to give a significant scholarship to a graduating Johnson County student.”

Those that wish to donate can drop off their items at the Occidental Hotel before January 17. Donations are tax deductible.

“Bring your checkbook, and plan to have a great time supporting our community and listening to some great music,” said Board member Lynn Young.
