While the common image of someone infected with HIV is a younger person, older adults in Wyoming should realize they may also be at risk for the disease, according to the Wyoming Department of Health.

Department of Health HIV Prevention Program Manager Robert Johnston says that many older people are sexually active, but they may not be practicing safe sex.

Johnston said that while HIV and AIDS may not grab the headlines as much as they did 20-30 years ago, they remain a very real threat, and in fact the numbers in Wyoming are going up.

As of June 30th, in Wyoming, 19% of persons living with HIV/AIDS were between the ages of 45 and 64.  The average age of people enrolled in the Wyoming Department of Health HIV Treatment Program is 45, with the oldest being 67.
