January and the New Year bring out the desire to get back in shape while shedding a few pounds. Zumba is one way to do just that.

Zumba. Even the name sounds strange. Zumbaing sounds even stranger,but over 30 women were out on the floor at Scotty's Skate Castle Saturday doing just that...zumbaing. Certified instructor Lorrie Anderson explains what Zumba is.

I'll be honest here. I tried Zumba and with those dance movements set to some pretty upbeat music; I struggled. The class would go one way and I would be going the other. And it didn't help that this fluffly, fifty-something woman was in a class with twenty year-old' tanned beauties dancing like no other. Perhaps I didn't give it a chance. Anderson makes everyone feel welcome. She explains.

And then comes my group.

All in all, it's a great workout burning off some 500 to 600 calories in an hour. Learning the moves?...a piece of cake, just follow Anderson as she leads from the front to catch on. There were women of all shapes, sizes, and ages, dancing their way into better shape.

The one word that describes Zumba is "fun." I watched Linda Hurley come in, standing to one side, looking a little out of place, but Anderson's crew came to the rescue, making her feel quite welcome. This was her first time here.

And best shot she did. I tell you, she caught right on moving with the best of them and through it all, she had a smile on her face. And that's the way a work-out should be. After watching this class, I might just give Zumba another chance.
