An exhibit celebrating Carnegie library buildings in Wyoming is on display now through the end of April at the Sheridan Fulmer Public Library.

The exhibit, called “Cowboy Carnegies,” consists of five panels detailing the history and architecture of Wyoming's 16 Carnegie libraries, including the Carnegie library that once served Sheridan. Sheridan County Public Library System Director Cameron Duff.

Duff said the exhibit shows the history of the donations by businessman/philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The exhibit includes photos of the libraries, along with a map showing the locations of the libraries and which ones are still in use as libraries.

Duff said Sheridan is fortunate to be one of the communities to host the traveling exhibit. According to a news release from the library, Sheridan's Carnegie Library received a $12,500 grant from the Carnegie Public Library fund, and the library opened on Aug. 1, 1905.

Carnegie grants funded construction of nearly 1,700 libraries across the county between 1889 and 1919. According to the Alliance for Historic Wyoming, which provides the traveling exhibit, the 16 libraries in Wyoming were built between 1899 and 1917.

Ten of those are still standing, and five are still used as libraries. The Alliance for Historic Wyoming is in the process of evaluating sites in hopes of nominating several of the state's Carnegie libraries to the National Register of Historic Places.
