At a work session Monday the Sheridan City Council received an update from Sheridan County Suicide Prevention Coalition Chair Vanessa Hastings, who discussed some of the findings from a 2007 report from Mental Health America and Thompson Healthcare. The report ranked Wyoming as one of the top ten most depressed states in the nation. Hastings also stated that the Center for Disease Control has reported that Wyoming is consistently in the top five for suicide rates nationwide.

Hastings expressed to the Council that raising awareness and teaching people what signs to look for are very important in furthering the cause of suicide prevention.

Hastings also talked about Nation Suicide Prevention Week which is coming up September 4th through the 10th. The SCSPC has a number of events planned throughout that week as well as the 2nd annual “Out of the Darkness” walk that is scheduled for Sunday, September 11th in Sheridan. We'll have more on the walk as well as the other events that the coalition has planned for that week for you at a later time.
