County Implements Partial Fire Restrictions

Partial fire restrictions have been implemented in Sheridan County effective as of 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Sheridan County commissioners approved the fire restrictions resolution during their staff meeting Monday on the recommendations of Chris Thomas, who's the county fire warden, and the chiefs of the county's fire districts.

Thomas said “fire restrictions” don't mean a full fire ban.

Restrictions are similar to previous years but there is a new provision this year. Thomas said in response to public comments, new language this year allows for small recreational fires at residences.

Thomas said the restrictions apply to all open burning outside incorporated municipalities and the federal lands including Bighorn National Forest, which are regulated by the federal government.

The county restrictions provide guidance for welding, grinding, branding and use of burn barrels, and use of fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited.

Thomas said the restrictions will remain in effect until removed, which will probably be in the fall when cooler and wetter weather arrives.

He said the restrictions are posted on the county website at
