Council Candidates Present Views on Fluoride

The three candidates for the only opposed race for Sheridan's city council appeared in agreement that either the court or a vote of the people of Sheridan is needed to settle the current debate on fluoride.

Robert Webster, Thayer Shafer and Mona Hanson have all filed for a two-year unexpired term.

The three were asked about their position on fluoridation of the city water supply at a candidates' forum recently. Members of the organization Clean Water Sheridan have threatened to file an injunction to stop the city from adding fluoride to the municipal water supply.

At the candidates' forum, Webster, the only current member of the city council, said documents and arguments have been presented both for and against fluoridation.

Shafer said his research on fluoride has raised doubts about the city's course.

Hanson said she has waffled on the issue, but she does believe fluoride has positive benefits. But she also believed the matter should not be decided by the council.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Clean Water Sheridan had not filed an injunction.
