CORRECTED: Sheridan Woman Dies from Injuries Sustained in Labor Day Weekend Motorcycle Crash

A Sheridan woman died at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings Wednesday as a result of her injuries sustained when she was thrown from her motorcycle in a crash during the Labor Day weekend on US 14 near Sibley Lake, according to a media release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Della Watkins, 63, was flown by emergency helicopter to St. Vincent Healthcare following the accident last Saturday, where she was treated until her death Wednesday.

Watkins was the third of four westbound vehicles on US 14 on Saturday, Sept. 3 at approximately 12:30 pm. The first vehicle was a was a 2005 Dodge Pickup driven by 29-year-old Darci Moore of Ranchester, the second was a handicap accessible minibus. As Moore slowed to make a left turn from the highway to Sibley Lake, Watkins and another motorcycle moved to pass both vehicles in front of her.

Watkins' motorcycle hit the left rear of the Dodge pickup as the pickup turned, at which time Watkins was ejected from the bike. She was not wearing a helmet.
The second motorcycle did not crash.

Rocky Mountain Ambulance responded and transported Watkins seven miles to the summit of the pass at Burgess Junction. She was then flown to St. Vincent Healthcare.

An AP report said yesterday that this Labor Day weekend was the first since 1992 without a Wyoming highway death, but was later retracted after this report was issued and the death determined to be a part of the weekend.

With Edits: The release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol originally said that just one motorcycle was involved. Two motorcycles, including the one Watkins was driving, attempted to pass the line of cars, not just one as first reported in the release. The second motorcycle did not crash. Also, the Dodge pickup was first in the line of cars and the minibus was second.
