Contract Awarded for TRMS Renovations

Dick Anderson Construction has been awarded the contract for renovations to the art and science rooms at Tongue River Middle School in Ranchester, for a bid of just under $298,200.

The bid was awarded by trustees of Sheridan County School District 1 at their meeting Tuesday night. District 1 Business Manager Jeremy Smith said the existing art and science spaces will be gutted back to studs, and the district will start over.

In addition, Smith said, the school's student population has grown significantly, which is another issue that has to be addressed. Smith said the contractors are scheduled to start work on June 4, the day after classes dismiss for the year, and hopefully will be done by Aug. 17, before classes resume next fall.

In other action Tuesday, trustees approved renewal of contracts for District 1 Superintendent Pete Kilbride and for the district's principals, business manager, curriculum director and special education director.

Trustees received a proposal from the Tongue River Valley Community Center, which is asking to use a portion of the Tongue River Learning Center – the district's former Tongue River Elementary School – but took no action on the request.

Trustees also received a proposal from Dr. Don King of Chadron State University that Chadron and School District 1 enter a partnership for training of student teachers. No action was taken on that proposal at this time.

Also, as required by state law, trustees approved continuing the district's current alternative schedule of four-day school weeks. The approval followed a public hearing, also required by state law, but no comments were made by the public.
