Company Looks to Open Coal Mine Near Sheridan

Posted in

(AP) - A Kentucky-based company says it is preparing to open a new coal mine northwest of Sheridan in 2016. The Brook Mine would be located on 14,500 acres of private and state land between Sheridan and Ranchester. The coal to be mined would not be federally owned, saving the cost of federal bonus payments made by many of the state's other coal companies.

Wyoming coal production is down from 443 million tons a year in 2010 to 388 million tons last year. Still, Lexington, Kentucky-based Ramaco hopes to buck the trend with its small mine that would extract only 8 million tons of coal a year. Other Wyoming coal mines extract 100 million tons a year. Ramaco CEO Randall Atkins tells the Casper Star-Tribune his company is looking into exporting its coal overseas. He added that the facility is projected to employ around 200 people.
