Common Core Discussed at JCSD1 Board Meeting

At their Monday night meeting the Johnson County School Board heard a presentation from Dr. Jeannie Barent on Common Core, explaining what it is and why so many districts throughout the country have adopted the standards.

Dr. Barent explains more about the benefits of implementing the Common Core.

The ultimate goal of implementing the higher Common Core standards is to make the nation's kids college or employment-ready when they leave high school.
The big push, she said, is for students to think in highly-cognitive ways: problem formation, research, interpretation, communication, precision and accuracy.

Forty-six states have adopted Common Core standards, including Wyoming, but not until the Wyoming Legislature officially adopted it in 2012.
That means, she said, that Wyoming is lagging behind some other states when it comes to achievement and reaching certain goals, but Barent believes, however, that the state and JCSD1 will be there, meeting their goals, in the end.

The district will be implementing more of common core teaching practices and familiarizing the board, faculties and parents to the terminologies involved in the higher state standards.
