Commissioners Eyeing SHSG Funds For JC Security

Security measures at the new Johnson County Judicial Center will be paid for with FEMA State Homeland Security Grant funds, if the Commissioners' plan moves forward.

County Emergency Management Coordinator Marilyn Connolly reported to the commissioners that a portion of FY2009 SHSG funds were still unused and that the security measures qualified for appropriate use of the funds.

Connolly said some of the FY2009 funds would need to be held to move the siren at the new justice center, but the remainder of the unused funds should be available for security at the judicial center.

The funds would purchase a doorway-type scanner, x-ray machine and a hand-held wand, similar to what is currently in use at airports.

The commissioners decided to table the issue until a security meeting can be scheduled to discuss options and reach a conclusion on the use of the funds and act on those decisions at an upcoming commissioner's meeting before the end of April.
