Commissioners Approve CUP for Chicken Processing Facility

Nearly a month ago Sheridan Media reported on the decision by the Sheridan County Planning and Zoning Commission to approve a Conditional Use Permit request from Brad and Esther Holliday to process and sell chickens on their property at 128 Dayton East Road. Tuesday, the request came before the Sheridan County Commissioners. The item sparked a two hour public comment period, where adjacent landowners voiced their concerns about the 11,000 square foot building that will be used as a seasonal processing plant as well as a part-time retail sales facility Friday and Saturday.

The majority of the neighbors concerns had to do with the fact that meat processing and retail sales aren't permitted uses in a agricultural district within the County. After closing the lengthy public comment period, Commissioners weighed in with their opinions and approved the CUP request by a vote of 3-to-2. Commissioners Terry Cram and Mike Nickel voted to deny the request. Nickel says that the concerns of the adjacent landowners is what led to his vote.

Production is limited to 2,000 chickens a year and all solid waste from those chickens must be removed from the property within two days after processing. Processing operation shall be June 15th through November 15th, three days a week between 7 am and 4 pm. Retail sales will only be allowed between 8 am and 3 pm Fridays and Saturdays.
