Trustees of the Northern Wyoming Community College District, which administers Sheridan and Gillette colleges and the Johnson County campus, were updated on topics from college enrollment to the strategic plan to the district's contribution to economic development Friday morning.

The meeting was a work session only, with no action taken by the board of trustees. College President Dr. Paul Young explained the goal of the four-hour session.

The session included a look not just at students who complete their classes but also about the quality of their learning, and how that compares with other colleges not only in Wyoming but nationally.

Young said the funding of community colleges in Wyoming is increasingly moving to performance funding, which focuses on how well the students are actually doing. Wendy Smith, who's marketing director for the college district, provided an update of the district's strategic plan, which calls for the district to produce 1,000 graduation awards per year by the year 2020. Smith said the plan hasn't changed since it was approved by the board last May.

The plan calls for the district's programs to be aligned to the local and regional economies and ensure that curricula, schedules, campus environment and services help students graduate on time with minimal debt and multiple job opportunities.

Susan Bigelow, the district's vice president of external relations and economic development, talked about the district's contributions to economic development and the state and federal grant picture.
