Fundraising started this week to raise the final $4 million needed to complete the new Whitney Center for the Arts now under construction at Sheridan College in Sheridan.

Sheridan College President Dr. Paul Young announced at a breakfast at the college on Thursday morning that the first gift of of $50,000 was already in hand. The donation came from Pat and Maurita Meehan in honor of Maurita Meehan's father, Bill Redle. She explained why the donation was especially appropriate.

In recognition of the donation, the new music library in the art center will be named the William and Ruth Redle Music Library. The college president said a $16 million grant from Whitney Benefits has fully funded construction of the art center, but another $4 million is needed to equip the new facility. Thursday's event was to raise public awareness of the needs.

The president said the new facility will include 12,000 square feet of renovated space and 48,000 square feet of new space when it's completed in the fall of 2016.

“Bruce” is Bruce Hoffman, formerly Sheridan College coach and now a trustee of the district that administers the college. The Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome was named in his honor several years ago.
